Enrique Kayejero

Enrique Torres Tortós is a Costa Rican artist whose work he himself defines as profoundly human. He grew up within a difficult environment marked by scarcity and aggression—circumstances that left enduring and perceptible traces upon his life. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica with a specialization in Painting, and it is through artistic expression that he has found a means of articulating his inner world. From those challenging life experiences, Enrique preserves memories that continue to shape his thinking and ultimately led him to become Kayejero, the alter ego through which he reflects both his surroundings and the urban realities that define them. Through this identity, he embarks upon a journey of recognition and confrontation with his own reality, delving into the particularities of his environment and transforming that process into an act of personal catharsis.

Kayejero does not abandon his origins, nor does he forget his roots when choosing a subject to translate onto canvas. He reconstructs lived experiences and transforms them into a silent outcry that externalizes what he feels. He does not disguise his existence; rather, he engages the viewer in a direct dialogue, revealing his inner self without concealment or artifice. His work offers the possibility of being wholly and unapologetically oneself.

The artist has symbolically transformed himself into an alchemist of the visual arts, creating works of remarkable vitality that allow him to journey inward—to release what oppresses him and to transform negative emotions into a positive pedagogy of life. He surprises us with images drawn from the everyday, rendered into scenes that disrupt the routine and unfold within compositions rich in layered elements. His practice frequently merges abstraction and figuration, employing mixed media techniques that enable him to express what erupts from his imagination with urgency and intensity. His constant restlessness in seeking new materials and methods through which to expand his creative force has led him to a persistent exploration that defines his work as undeniably contemporary, yet equally imbued with a timeless energy.

Over the course of twenty-five years of professional practice, Kayejero has exhibited his work in numerous solo and collective exhibitions. Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, the United States, and Singapore have all served as stages for presenting the creations of this accomplished artist. His work forms part of numerous private collections.
